But I have no fucking clue what to use it for.
Random C&C pic of some Morgans for ya.
Anyway, I want like a $5k-$10k (or less?) manual coupe/convertible but all my thoughts make no sense. Making sense isn’t a requirement for my 1st car, the Cayman is my daily, my track car, my gear hauler. Practical! But, a second car is for a purpose, or multi purpose but shouldn’t be a competitor to the Cayman.
My first thought is TRACK/AUTOX CAR!! It would be so much cheaper than the Cayman to run I think and I wouldn’t worry about hurting my expensive and most used car. But, how can I justify taking the Cayman out of track duty? It’s too good.
Another C&C pic not related.
Second thought is a cheaper commuter car. Maybe a big low rpm V8 for fun noises and such (obv not great MPG). It can just soak up miles, I can take it on long highway drives too maybe. Doesn’t need extras, just some comfy seats and a nice sound track, maybe a nice audio system but I can update that easily. But again, the Cayman is still pretty great as a daily and road tripper.
Third thought would be a convertible to just cruise around in. I had so much fun in the Miata I rented just driving with the top down, really saw what much of Oppo talks about. I wouldn’t want it 100% of the time, but its a life I could live often. However, dry eyes and messed up hair ain’t a good look for me so I have to plan well.
I would daily this... but idk about reliability...
My big problem is also that I only have 1 garage. So if I have a car that leaks, or needs long-term work, then my Cayman has to live outside again which is just mean after I bought a house for it.

Find a second car that is great in its own right; not something that is _______ that the cayman falls short of. I’m thinking 135i would be a good compliment to a cayman.

Ahem... * cough* look over here *cough*
Get one while you can, there are so many at any price point. Take your pick of coupe hatchback or convertible . Simple, cheap v8 up front, stick in the middle, dive at the back. Support and aftermarket as far as you can see. You want help on a setup? Someone, somewhere has already done what you were thinking about 5x over. I can practially use mine as a pickup. There are also plenty of race series for these cars if you do decide to go tracking or autoX.

Counterpoint: get a 1 st Gen facelifted Acura TSX, preferably manual. You’ll thank me later.

Never liked the looks but I TOTALLY respect them as the platform they’ve become for cheap race fun . I'll add it to the list.

So I've definitely looked into them, I love them, but is that going to be significantly more expensive to maintain at this price/age?

I have been coming around to them, but still... Meh. So many good anecdotal stories but I feel like they don't offer the same performance as other options at that price. I might be incredibly wrong though. Added to the list.

For your 2nd option, a base C5 would be great. 5.7L, 350ish bhp, quite comfy and it still gets 30mpg (my Z gives me 27mpg on the highway even while flooring it at all exits), 6 speed T56.
They are around $10k in the Midwest.

It’s hard to say; I know the later n55 engines are less problematic but getting one with a manual and reasonable miles for under $10k would probably be tricky. You might have luck finding a n54 with an owner that has addressed the common issues. It’s probably be easier to find a 335i as the prices on those look a little softer.

Left field suggestion: SR20-swapped Nissan Hardbody. Pickup truck utility, slow car fast entertainment.

There’s an Exocet for sale (a couple, actually). $10k could likely get you one of those assuming you have a garage. Otherwise, I’d go C5 or the nicest NA Miata you can find.

Haha very left field but very oppo. Not a truck guy though.

#1 and #3 scream Miata to me. For whatever reason, at $2, this popped into my mind:
After seeing the Foxbody suggestion, this popped up:
It’s like a Foxbody, but... better. Also very tunable as well. And that wing? Factory.

Yeah same about the Miata, my main problem is an old Miata may not do great outside since I have a 1 car garage. Also, how funny would a 2 car fleet of Cayman and Miata be? Lol we car enthusiasts are crazy

Hear me out on this one, you could just get a VW Cabrio for like $1000 and dump a few grand into making it fast as fuuuuuck. If a soft top is a no go, then any other Mk3. They’re already pretty light and getting them above 200 wheel horsepower with forced induction is very easy.

I do want a project car eventually, but that amount of tools, garage space, and research is a little beyond me currently. I’m more of the level of fluids , brakes, bolt ons, plugs, filters, belts. Not like turbo, engine breakdown, etc.
